An engraved emblem book by the Vicentine painter Battista Pittoni, published in Venice in 1562 with explanatory verses by Lodovico Dolce, collecting the personal devices of princes, dukes and learned men for courtly and heraldic readers. Each plate sets a motto and emblem inside a strapwork cartouche flanked by nude figures, herms, putti, lion and grotesque masks and fruit swags, supplying ready-made frames, banderoles and mascarons.
