The dictionary of needlework : an encyclopaedia of artistic, plain, and fancy needlework dealing fully with the details of all the stitches employed, the method of working, the materials used, the meaning of technical terms, and, where necessary, tracing the origin and history of the various works described
An illustrated encyclopaedia of needlework compiled by Sophia Caulfeild and Blanche Saward and published in London by A.W. Cowan in 1882, written for Victorian women working embroidery, lace and plain sewing at home. Plates mix fine engraved details of drawn-thread borders, bobbin lace grounds and metalwork crosses with chromolithographed colour panels of poppies and stylised flower bands, giving repeatable border strips, radial rosettes and stitch-texture fills.
