The dictionary of needlework : an encyclopaedia of artistic, plain, and fancy needlework dealing fully with the details of all the stitches employed, the method of working, the materials used, the meaning of technical terms, and, where necessary, tracing the origin and history of the various works described
A Victorian reference encyclopaedia of needlework compiled by Sophia Caulfeild and Blanche Saward, published in London by A.W. Cowan in 1882 for home embroiderers and professional needleworkers. The plates photograph finished work in close detail — scrolling acanthus borders, flat flower heads, dotted fillings and stitch samples rendered in grey halftone — giving designers ready-made ornament repeats and textile surface textures.
