Caulfeild, S. F. A. (Sophia Frances Anne), 1824-1911, Saward, Blanche C · 1882 · London : A.W. Cowan · 178 pictures

A Victorian reference encyclopaedia of needlework compiled by Sophia Caulfeild and Blanche Saward, published in London by A. W. Cowan in 1882 for home and professional needleworkers looking up stitches, materials, and technical terms. The plates are dense black-line engravings of lace grounds, macramé knotting, embroidered borders, darned net, and finished articles such as fringed kerchiefs, giving designers repeatable grid patterns, scalloped and zigzag edgings, and bow-and-flower motifs rendered as fine hatched texture.
