Dictionnaire infernal; répertoire universel des êtres, des personnages, des livres, des faits et des choses qui tiennent aux esprits ..
Collin de Plancy's Dictionnaire infernal, an alphabetical French encyclopedia of demons, spirits, magic and superstition, issued in Paris by H. Plon in 1863 for general readers. The wood engravings mix grotesque figures with caricatured faces and clawed limbs, small narrative vignettes of drinkers, posted notices and figures under trees, all built from dense hatching usable as spot art and silhouette.
