Die altgermanische thierornamentik; typologische studie über germanische metallgegenstände aus dem IV. bis IX. jahrhundert, nebst einer studie über irische ornamentik
Bernhard Salin's 1904 archaeological study, published in Stockholm and translated into German by Johanna Mestorf, classifies Germanic metalwork animal ornament from the fourth to ninth centuries, with a supplementary section on Irish ornament, addressed to museum curators and antiquarians. The 527 line engravings show brooches, buckles, sword fittings and mounts drawn in fine hatching, isolated on white, plus flattened diagrams of interlaced beasts, spirals and gripping limbs that can be lifted as repeatable pattern units.
