A German instruction manual on map lettering, written by A. Fretwurst and published by Konrad Wittwer in Stuttgart in 1903 for cartographers, surveyors and technical draughtsmen. The plates show constructed alphabets and numerals on ruled and slanted guide grids, plus specimen place names set across map fragments with coastlines, roads and parcel outlines, giving designers skeleton letterforms, spacing diagrams and engraved cartographic labelling to copy.
