The discourses of Sir Joshua Reynolds
Sir Joshua Reynolds's academy lectures on painting, reissued in 1842 by J. Carpenter of London with notes and plates by the engraver John Burnet, addressed to art students and practising painters. The plates are etchings in brown and sepia ink: chalk-style nude figure studies, sheets of repeated reclining and sprawling bodies, heavy drapery, and tonal wash reductions of old-master group compositions useful for figure reference and light-and-shade schemes.
