The discoverie of witchcraft
Reginald Scot's 1584 skeptical treatise against witch-hunting, reissued in 1886 by Elliot Stock in London with notes by Brinsley Nicholson, aimed at antiquarians and students of magic and demonology. The woodcuts reproduce the originals: conjurors' circles inscribed with divine names in blackletter and Latin, ringed with crosses and stars, plus daggers set in the ground and stage-trick props such as balls, cords and split knife handles.
