Anton Francesco Doni's dialogue on sculpture and painting, printed by Gabriel Giolito in Venice in 1549 for Italian readers debating the merits of the two arts. The plates here are square woodcut initials in which letterforms sit among hatched landscapes and small figures — a woman with a spear-bearing beast, bricklayers, a satyr and nymph — usable as decorative capitals or vignettes.
