Dissertatio et animadversiones ad nuper inventum Severae martyris epitaphium
Antonio Maria Lupi's 1734 Latin dissertation on a newly found catacomb epitaph of the martyr Severa, printed in Palermo by Stefano Amato for antiquarians and church historians. The 61 plates and in-text cuts are facsimiles of incised inscriptions: crude Roman and Greek capitals set in blocks, chi-rho and cross monograms, palms, anchors and scratched graffiti lines, printed as solid black marks that lift cleanly as letterform and symbol stencils.
