Typot, Jacob, 1540-ca. 1600, Sadeler, Ægidius, 1568-1629, Boodt, Anselmus de, 1550-1632 · 1601 · Pragae : [s.n.] · 742 pictures

A three-volume compendium of the personal devices and mottoes of popes, emperors and kings, compiled by Jacob Typotius with plates engraved by Aegidius Sadeler after Anselmus de Boodt, published at Prague in 1601 for court readers and heralds. Each plate is a circular medallion holding one object or scene — a sapling and feather on a peaked hill, a spoked wheel, a carnation-filled urn, a heron nesting in a tree — ringed by Latin capitals and cut in fine engraved line with dense hatched ground, giving designers ready-made roundel emblems, lettering rings and isolated symbolic motifs.
