An Italian-language edition of Andrea Alciato's emblems, printed by Guillaume Rouillé at Lyon in 1549 for readers who wanted moral devices with explanatory verse. Each small woodcut sits inside an engraved-style frame of strapwork scrolls, grotesque masks, fruit swags and architectural mouldings, giving designers ready-made cartouches, border strips and mascaron ornaments as well as the emblem scenes themselves.
