Divine emblems
An 1867 London edition from Bickers & Son of John Bunyan's emblem verses for children, first published in 1686, reissued with a memoir by Alexander Smith. Alongside the emblem cuts the book carries pen-drawn tailpieces and headbands: symmetrical sprays of lilies, acorns and acanthus, solid-black shield shapes with stippled fills and curling tendrils, useful as dividers, spot ornaments and border ends.
