Dresses and decorations of the Middle Ages
Henry Shaw's two-volume antiquarian survey of medieval dress and ornament, issued by William Pickering in London in 1843 for antiquaries, architects and the designers of the Gothic Revival. Plates copied from illuminated manuscripts, tomb effigies and enamels give figures in patterned robes, historiated initials, interlace roundels and border strips in flat red, yellow, green and blue with gold—usable as costume reference, repeat pattern and decorative letterforms.
