Dresses and decorations of the Middle Ages
Henry Shaw's two-volume survey of medieval costume and ornament, hand-coloured and issued by William Pickering in London in 1843 for antiquaries, architects and designers drawing on Gothic sources. The plates reproduce illuminated initials, textile patterns, heraldry, metalwork and dress from manuscripts and monuments, giving designers ready alphabets of interlaced letters, diaper and lattice grounds, and flat red-blue-gold colour schemes.
