Dresses and decorations of the Middle Ages
Henry Shaw's two-volume antiquarian survey of medieval costume and ornament, hand-coloured and issued by William Pickering in London in 1843 for collectors, architects and historical painters. Plates copy illuminated manuscripts and monuments: kneeling kings in fleur-de-lys robes, ermine-lined court dress, heraldic tabards, and gold-and-ultramarine initials with white penwork foliage, useful as flat colour-block patterns and letterforms.
