Drops of water : their marvelous and beautiful inhabitants displayed by the microscope
A popular microscopy book by Agnes Catlow, published in London by Reeve and Benham in 1851, introducing amateur observers to freshwater microorganisms. Hand-coloured plates set pale green, pink and yellow algae, diatoms, rotifers and ciliates inside a circular field that mimics the microscope's view, giving designers ready-made roundel compositions of numbered organic shapes on cream grounds.
