Duodecim specula Deum aliquando videre desideranti concinnata

David, Joannes, 1545?-1613, Galle, Théodore, 1571-1633 · 1610 · Antuerpiae : Ex officina Plantiniana, apud Ioannem Moretum · 28 pictures

A Jesuit emblem book of twelve "mirrors" for meditation on seeing God, written by Joannes David and engraved by Theodoor Galle for the Plantin press of Jan Moretus in Antwerp in 1610, aimed at devout Catholic readers. The copperplate engravings stack many small scenes into one frame — kneeling figures, roundels of feasts and crowds, radiant orbs, inscribed banderoles, strapwork shrines and grazing animals — each part tagged with a letter key, offering compartmented compositions, diagram-like symbol arrangements and ready-made scroll labels.
