A Lutheran emblem book by the Nuremberg preacher Johann Saubert, drawn by Michael Herr and engraved by Peter Isselburg for Simon Halbmaier in 1625, issued in four parts with paired Latin and German mottoes for Protestant devotional reading. The oblong copperplates split each scene into two or three compartments divided by columns, balustrades and arches, setting kneeling worshippers, sickbeds, tavern kitchens, sowers, street brawls and demon-filled hell mouths side by side in dense fine hatching, with lettered banners and rays breaking from clouds available as ready-made frames and captions.
