Two lectures by the Florentine humanist Benedetto Varchi, printed by the ducal press of Lorenzo Torrentino in Florence in 1549, commenting on a sonnet by Michelangelo and debating whether sculpture or painting is the nobler art, with letters from Michelangelo and other artists appended, addressed to academicians and artists. The pictures are woodcut historiated initials in which robed figures, a horse and landscape elements are set behind dense horizontal hatching, usable as drop caps, small figure vignettes, or a model for ruled-line shading.
