Dévises héroiqves et emblèmes
A French emblem book, Claude Paradin's collection of heraldic devices reissued with François d'Amboise's additions by R. Boutonné in Paris in 1622, made for courtiers, heralds and readers of impresa literature. The 179 small woodcuts set single emblematic objects against blank ground — a snake coiled around a sheaf of arrows, a plumed mace hung with chains, a crown of thorns radiating light above a plant — giving designers compact, high-contrast line motifs with no frames or backgrounds to remove.
