Dyeing and calico printing
A technical manual on dyeing and calico printing by the Manchester industrial chemist Frederick Crace Calvert, published posthumously in 1878 by Palmer & Howe for dyers, printworks chemists and textile manufacturers. The plates are mounted cloth swatches photographed as rectangles: flat madder reds, crimsons and browns showing visible twill and weave texture, plus printed stripes in ochre on undyed ground, useful as a nineteenth-century industrial colour palette, fabric texture source, or frayed-edge rectangular motif.
