The earlier English water-colour painters
A survey of early English watercolour painters written by the critic Cosmo Monkhouse and issued in London by Seeley in 1897 for art students and collectors. The plates are monochrome halftones of watercolour views — hilltop castles, abbey ruins, balustraded terraces, wooded river valleys — built from soft grey washes with broad skies and dark massed foliage, useful as tonal landscape backdrops.
