Early Flemish artists and their predecessors on the lower Rhine
An 1887 London art-historical survey by William Martin Conway, published by Seeley & Co. for English collectors and students of Netherlandish and Rhenish painting. Line-engraved reproductions of fifteenth-century panels and altarpieces show enthroned Madonnas in rose gardens, crowded Deposition and Crucifixion groups, and Gothic architectural interiors, with dense crosshatching that flattens paint into usable black-and-white pattern.
