The early Flemish painters: notices of their lives and works

Crowe, J. A. (Joseph Archer), 1825-1896, Cavalcaselle, G. B. (Giovanni Battista), 1820-1897 · 1872 · London : J. Murray · 21 pictures

A critical survey of early Netherlandish painting by Joseph Archer Crowe and Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle, published by John Murray in London in 1872 for collectors, students and connoisseurs. The plates are outline engravings copying medieval altarpieces and wall paintings, laid out as gridded compartments of arched niches, standing saints, tomb effigies and crowded narrative scenes with lettered captions above each panel, useful for linear figure silhouettes, arcade frames and multi-panel page layouts.
