Early illustrated books : a history of the decoration and illustration of books in the 15th and 16th centuries
A survey of book decoration and illustration in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries by British Museum bibliographer Alfred W. Pollard, published in London in 1917 for collectors, librarians and students of early printing. Its plates reproduce woodcuts from incunabula: foliate page borders, historiated initials, enthroned kings and scribes, pilgrim figures, and architectural scenes in hard black line suited to reuse as frames and vignettes.
