Early Oxford bindings;

Gibson, Strickland, 1877-1958 · 1903 · Oxford, Printed for the Bibliographical Society at the Oxford University · 39 pictures

Strickland Gibson's 1903 survey of Oxford bookbinding from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, printed for the Bibliographical Society at Oxford University Press for bibliographers and collectors. Plates photograph whole leather covers in raking light: blind-stamped panels, repeated small tools, lattice and roll borders, raised sewing bands and clasp remnants, giving usable rectangular frame structures, stamp motifs and worn leather texture.
