A 1667 London alchemical tract printed for Matthew Smelt, gathering George Thor's introduction to "philosophers magical gold," Zoroaster's Cave, and Pontanus's letter on the mineral fire for readers pursuing the philosophers' stone. The pictures are small woodcut initial letters set in square blocks of hatched foliage, buds and rosettes, usable as drop caps, monograms or worn-edged ornamental tiles.
