An electrical method of studying sound waves
A 1920 physics thesis by Thurston Dorr Owens, submitted at the University of Illinois, describing an electrical apparatus for recording sound waves. Illustrations pair dark photographic plates of oscillograph traces—tight combs of vertical strokes on a black field—with line diagrams of waveforms crossing a horizontal axis, useful as ready-made wave profiles, tick patterns and lettered curve comparisons.
