Elementary principles of ornament
A drawing manual on ornament by James Ward, published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1890 for art students and craft apprentices learning historical decorative forms. Line engravings and pen diagrams break ornament into parts: acanthus leaves, scrolling stems, rosettes, shells and cartouches, some outlined for copying, others fully hatched as finished black-and-white motifs.
