Emblemata
Emblem book in Latin by the Hungarian humanist János Zsámboki (Sambucus), printed by Christophe Plantin at Antwerp in 1564, with woodcuts after Pieter Huys and Lucas de Heere for learned readers. Each small square scene—figures in landscapes, ruins, shipwrecks, animal fables—sits inside an ornamental border of grotesque masks, herms, scrollwork and birds, giving designers reusable frames and compact allegorical vignettes.
