Emblemata

Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550, Mignault, Claude, ca. 1536-1606, Thuille, Johann, 1590-1630 · 1661 · Patauij [Padua] : typis Pauli Frambotti Bibliopolæ · 232 pictures

Andrea Alciato's Emblemata, the sixteenth-century emblem collection reissued at Padua in 1661 by Paolo Frambotto with the commentaries of Claude Mignault and Johann Thuille, for scholars and readers of Latin moral allegory. Each of the 232 woodcuts sets a small square scene—a man shaking fruit from a tree, a hunter and hounds, birds on a rock, a gourd vine—inside a heavy strapwork frame of grotesque masks, putti, fruit swags and scrolled volutes, usable as ready-made borders and cartouches apart from their pictures.
