Emblemata amatoria = Emblems of love = Embleme d'amore = Emblemes d'amour : in four languages, dedicated to the ladys
A four-language emblem book of love, compiled by Philip Ayres after Otto van Veen's Amorum emblemata and sold in London in 1683 for a fashionable female readership. The 45 upright copperplate engravings set winged Cupids acting out each motto in thin-lined landscapes with a tree at one edge, domed towns and balustrades behind, hung drapery, discarded armour and scattered papers, and skies of loose hatching with flying birds; useful for cut-out putti, small emblem vignettes and sparse engraved backgrounds.
