Emblemata amatoria, iam demum emendata
A Dutch love-emblem book printed in Amsterdam in 1608 by Dirck Pietersz. Pers, pairing engraved emblems with Latin, Dutch and French verses by Daniel Heinsius, Hugo Grotius and others for a literate courtly readership. The plates are circular line engravings in which a winged Cupid acts out a conceit in an open landscape — grafting a branch, torching a pillar, climbing an obelisk of vines — with the motto lettered around the rim and a French tag below, giving designers ready-made roundel frames, curved lettering models and compact figure-and-emblem vignettes.
