Emblemata Andreae Alciati ...
Andrea Alciati's Latin emblem book, printed by Guillaume Rouillé at Lyon in 1548 for humanist readers who read mottoes, woodcuts and verse together. The woodcuts sit inside strapwork borders crowded with masks, grotesques, cornucopias, winged putti and scrolling foliage, giving designers small framing devices, cartouche shapes and repeating ornamental strips.
