Emblemata : et aliquot nummi antiqui operis
A Latin emblem book by the Hungarian humanist János Zsámboki (Johannes Sambucus), printed by Christophe Plantin at Antwerp in 1566 for scholarly readers, with a closing section on antique coins. The 240 pictures are small square woodcuts, each framed by a white-on-black arabesque border, showing draped classical figures acting out mottoes in open landscapes with distant towns, trees and water, alongside plates of coin obverses and reverses; useful for border patterns, compact allegorical scenes and numismatic roundels.
