Emblemata ethico-politica carmine explicata
A Jesuit emblem book by Johann Kreihing, printed in Antwerp by Jacob Meursius in 1661, pairing Latin verse commentary with numbered engravings for readers being taught moral and political lessons. The 162 small oval copperplate scenes, hatched densely for shadow and cloud, show men in broad hats and cloaks acting out proverbs against walled towns, church towers, gallows and open country, and supply compact vignette frames, period costume figures, and shorthand landscape backgrounds.
