A Latin emblem book by the Gouda jurist Florentius Schoonhovius, printed by Andries Burier in Gouda in 1618, pairing moral and civil mottoes with engraved plates and prose commentary for educated readers. The 77 small oblong engravings set one or two figures — peasants, travellers, hunters in slashed doublets and plumed hats — in wooded landscapes with cottages, cliffs, snakes and distant towers, rendered in fine open line with hatched shadow, useful for isolated figure silhouettes, foliage textures and landscape vignettes.
