A Latin emblem book by the Dutch poet Florens Schoonhoven, printed at Gouda by Andries Burier in 1618, pairing moral and civil emblems with the author's own prose commentary for a learned readership. The small oblong copperplate engravings set one or two figures in wooded landscapes acting out each motto — an archer, a hunter with a torch, Cupid and a fleeing stag, a snake in the grass — giving designers compact scenes with heavy foliage, distant church towers and hill horizons.
