Schoonhoven, Florens, 1594-1648 · 1618 · Goudae, Apud A. Burier · 74 pictures

A Latin emblem book by Florens Schoonhoven, printed at Gouda in 1618 for learned readers, pairing moral and civic mottoes with engraved plates and prose commentary. The small oblong copperplates set one or two figures in open landscapes with hatched skies, distant church towers and wooded hills, staging acts like a peasant warming a satyr, a man beaten with a staff, and a corpse picked at by birds; useful for figure silhouettes, emblem framing and stippled cloud and foliage texture.
