An emblem book on the use and misuse of things, first devised with Dutch verses by Dirck Volkertszoon Coornhert and reissued in 1609 at Arnhem with new Latin poems by Richard Lubbaeus, aimed at readers seeking moral and household instruction. The 26 numbered square engravings set nude and costumed figures in arcaded interiors, towns, and open country — a man handing coins to a seated pair, a helmeted soldier among swine, a laid table with dogs beneath — with dense cross-hatching and plate numbers left in place, useful for figure groups, sixteenth-century dress, and framed vignette layouts.
