Emblemata moralia
An emblem book by the Spanish diplomat Juan de Borja, issued in Latin at Berlin in 1697 by J. M. Rudiger for readers of moral and allegorical devices. Each of the 107 plates is a small circular copperplate engraving placing one object—a tree struck by light, a cartwheel, a ruined arch, a pruned oak—in an open landscape with low horizon and hatched clouds, giving designers a ready set of roundel motifs and isolated silhouetted objects.
