Emblemata politica & Orationes. Ex officina
Marcus Zuerius Boxhorn's Emblemata politica & Orationes, a Latin emblem book of political maxims and speeches printed by Jan Janssonius in Amsterdam in 1635 for scholars, lawyers and civic officeholders. The small upright copper engravings build their tone entirely from ruled parallel hatching and cross-hatching: leaning trees against distant castles and rivers, a single labourer or woman caught mid-task, a draped altar with a low flame, a brick oven, doorways opening onto crowded rooms; useful for compact vignette frames, hatched skies and shadow textures, and isolated working figures.
