Emblemata selectiora. Typis elegantissimis expressa, nec non sententiis, carminibus, historiis ac proverbiis, ex scriptoribus cum sacris tum profanis, antiquis & recentioribus, illustrata
An emblem book printed in Amsterdam by Franciscus van der Plaats in 1704, pairing engraved devices with mottoes, verses and quotations from sacred and secular authors for learned readers. Each plate sets a single motif — a sun with a human face, a hand emerging from cloud, a lightning bolt, a sheaf of grain — inside a ruled circle over a landscape of towers, hills and harbours, giving designers ready-made roundel emblems.
