Veen, Otto van, 1556-1629 · 1624 · Brvxellae, Ex Officina H. Antonii · 51 pictures

An emblem book compiled by the Antwerp painter Otto van Veen and printed in Brussels in 1624, offering ready-made devices with Latin and French mottoes for princes, clergy, soldiers and other patrons. Numbered engraved roundels, three or nine to a page, hold single objects and small groupings — skulls, scales, crossed swords, caducei, hourglasses, sickles, eyes flanked by wheat — against hatched grounds with motto banners, useful as compact pictorial symbols, device frames, or ruled grids of captioned icons.
