Emblemata v. cl. Andreae Alciati : cu imaginibus plerisque restitutis ad mentem auctoris
An emblem book: Andrea Alciati's Latin emblems, first issued 1531, in the 1618 Padua edition of Pietro Paolo Tozzi with commentary by Claude Mignault and Lorenzo Pignoria, made for learned readers of moral and allegorical imagery. The 256 square woodcuts set single figures, beasts and allegories in ruled landscapes, with dense horizontal hatching for sky and modelling that suits crisp black-and-white reuse.
