Emblemes
Francis Quarles's Emblemes, printed in London in 1635 for English Protestant readers, pairs devotional verse and meditations with numbered engraved plates copied from Jesuit emblem books of the Low Countries. Each small upright plate sets a winged, rayed Divine Love and a child-like soul in a plain landscape with towers, globes, trees and cloud-broken skies—usable as compact figure vignettes, ray motifs and emblem framing.
