Emblemes d'Alciat : en latin et francois vers povr vers
Andrea Alciati's emblem book, printed in Paris in 1574 by Hiérosme de Marnef and Guillaume Cavellat with Latin verses and facing French translations line for line, made for humanist readers and students of moral allegory. The 231 small woodcuts set figures from myth and fable into hatched landscapes with hill towns, rivers and lone trees, drawn in coarse outline with dense parallel shading, useful as compact allegorical scenes, borders of foliage, and stock figures of gods, archers, beasts and altars.
