Emblemes d'amour en quatre langue
Philip Ayres's four-language emblem book of love, printed in London in 1683 for readers who read mottoes and verses in English, Latin, Italian and French side by side. Forty-five small copperplate engravings put winged cupids in open landscapes with hilltop castles, farmhouses, single trees and cross-hatched ground, giving designers compact figure-in-landscape vignettes, cupid attributes such as bow, arrows and torch, and dense linear skies.
